A matched set of eight late twentieth-century studio pottery coffee mugs by California ceramic artist Joy Imai. Each stoneware mug is hand thrown and signed Imai on the underside, creating a cohesive service with the individual character associated with studio-made ceramics.
The mugs are finished in a warm grey-beige glaze accented by a rust to copper-toned scrolling decorative band. Their substantial handles and softly rounded forms give the group a grounded, functional quality, while the restrained palette works particularly well within California Studio Pottery, Rustic and Organic Modern interiors.
Joy Imai worked within the Palo Alto and California studio-pottery tradition, and this complete eight-piece set offers a particularly effective presentation of her functional ceramic work. The consistent glaze treatment, matching scale and signed construction make the group well suited to everyday coffee service, display, or a collection of American studio ceramics.
