Deruta cups and matching saucers, hand painted in Deruta, Umbria, Italy, during the late twentieth century. The complete eight-piece service comprises four cups and four saucers, with the saucers additionally bearing the Made for Marias retail or commission marking.

Crafted in traditional Italian maiolica, the glazed earthenware is decorated by hand in a vivid polychrome palette of cobalt blue, yellow, green, turquoise and rust red against a white ground. The saucers feature densely worked floral and scrolling ornament derived from Renaissance decorative traditions, framed by yellow borders, while the cups provide a complementary contrast with yellow rims and green to turquoise handles.

The natural variations in brushwork reflect the hand-painted production of the set and give each component an individual character within the coordinated design. The combination of Deruta manufacture, colourful maiolica decoration and complete service-for-four format makes the set particularly suited to coffee or tea service and Italian Country table settings.
