The lid is inlaid in iridescent mother-of-pearl (luodian) and colored shell/bone with the classic Chinese motif "Bird on a Plum Branch" (xishang meishao, literally "joy on the brow") — a long-tailed songbird in soft cream and blue-green perches among red and white plum blossoms, a symbol of good news arriving and the arrival of spring. A small oval cartouche with calligraphy sits at the upper left, completing the scholarly composition.

The box operates as a slide-out drawer — the top panel pulls out to reveal a lined interior, ideal for rings, cufflinks, tea, stamps, or small keepsakes. The contrast between the deep red-brown wood and the shimmering shell inlay is quietly elegant.

A versatile piece for a dresser, desk, or bookshelf; pairs beautifully with both Chinoiserie and collected, classic interiors.
