This is a captivating vintage Chinese wooden box, featuring a stunning inlaid image of a Buddhist deity on the lid. More than just a decorative item, this is a traditional "Lu Ban" puzzle box (or trick box), designed with a hidden mechanism to open it. It is a beautiful blend of spiritual art, woodcraft, and playful engineering.
Design & Details:
The Deity (Four-Armed Guanyin): The top lid is exquisitely inlaid with colored Mother of Pearl (shell), depicting a seated Four-Armed Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara). She is shown with a halo, multiple arms holding symbolic implements, and wearing flowing pink and green robes. This imagery is highly revered in Buddhist culture, symbolizing compassion and the power to help all beings.
The Puzzle Mechanism: This is a classic Chinese "Lu Ban Lock" style secret box. It does not open with a standard hinge or key. Instead, it requires a specific sequence of sliding or pressing hidden panels to unlock it. (Note: A video demonstration or detailed photos of the opening process would be highly beneficial for buyers).
Material & Craftsmanship: The box is crafted from Huali wood (a type of rosewood), characterized by its beautiful, rich golden-brown grain and dense weight. The corners feature decorative, cloud-like inlaid corner pieces, adding an elegant frame to the central deity.
Patina: The wood has a warm, glossy patina that only develops with age, giving it a sophisticated antique feel.
