This is a fascinating vintage Chinese jewelry box or storage chest, crafted from dense dark hardwood (likely Rosewood / Zitan) and decorated with vibrant Mother of Pearl (shell) inlay. The lid features a highly detailed narrative scene, making it a wonderful piece of Asian folk art.
Design & Details:
Central Motif (Qilin Sending a Child): The top lid is inlaid with a colorful scene of a Qilin (a mythical hooved creature) carrying a young child (or immortal) on its back. The child is holding a lotus flower, a symbol of purity and continuous generation.
Symbolism: This motif is known as "麒麟送子" (Qilin Song Zi), a traditional Chinese blessing for fertility, good fortune, and the arrival of brilliant descendants.
Colors & Calligraphy: The inlay uses vibrant shell pieces in pink, yellow, blue, and green tones. The dark wood background is accented by white shell calligraphy on the left ("送子") and right ("麒麟"), adding an elegant, scholarly touch.
