The composition depicts a dramatic black tree with exposed, spreading roots dividing a vivid yellow and red landscape. Concentric black-and-white bands encircle the central image, giving the plate a bold, graphic quality. The symbolic tree and root imagery closely relate to Buck’s broader exploration of nature, growth and interconnected forms.

Individually hand-painted and glazed, this is an original artwork rather than a commercially produced print or edition. The reverse is hand-signed “John E. Buck” and dated 2001, with a remnant of its numbered label and metal mounting hardware remaining in place.

The plate was commissioned for the Hamptons Artists Against Abuse charity plate auction benefiting The Retreat. It comes from a private South Florida estate collection that included multiple original artist-created plates from the event.

John E. Buck is an acclaimed American sculptor and printmaker known for his intricate woodcuts, carved wood assemblages and bronze sculptures. His work is represented in numerous institutional collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Condition:

Very good vintage condition with light age-appropriate surface wear and natural variations from the hand-painting and glazing process. The reverse label shows age and partial paper loss. Metal mounting hardware remains attached. Please review all photographs carefully.
