Vintage Makonde Tree of Life Ujamaa Wood Carving Sculpture
Measures 4" wide, 3" deep and 13 3/4" tall.
This is a traditional hand-carved Makonde "Ujamaa" or "Tree of Life" sculpture, created by the Makonde people of Tanzania and Mozambique. Known as Ujamaa (meaning familyhood or community), these totem-style carvings depict figures holding onto and supporting one another to symbolize unity, generational continuity, and human interdependence. Handcrafted from a single piece of dense, dark tropical hardwood such as African blackwood (mpingo) or ironwood. Crafted within the rich sculptural traditions of the Makonde, an East African ethnic group widely renowned for their intricate woodwork.
These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s.
