Its extraordinary patina has been earned slowly—through years of hands opening drawers, objects being placed upon its top, and the countless small routines of everyday domestic life. The result is a surface that could never convincingly be recreated: warm, wonderfully varied, and rich with evidence of generations of use.

Originally designed as a useful piece of household furniture, the chiffonier offered storage without the scale of a larger dresser or cupboard. This example has an especially appealing asymmetrical configuration, with three drawers arranged down one side and a cabinet occupying the other. It is a practical design that also gives the façade a wonderfully informal quality—very much in keeping with the character of English country furniture.
