Wilhelm Kåge Argenta Vase for Gustavsberg, Sweden, 1930s
Designed by Wilhelm Kåge for Gustavsberg, Argenta is one of the most distinctive series in Swedish 20th-century ceramics.
Kåge joined Gustavsberg in 1917 and became the factory’s artistic director, playing a central role in transforming its artistic production. At the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, Gustavsberg introduced Argenta — an exclusive art pottery series that would become one of Kåge’s most recognizable designs.
Argenta is defined by its characteristic deep green glaze combined with hand-painted silver decoration. The rich green surface was paired with stylized motifs inspired by nature, mythology and the animal world, including flowers, fish, dragons and human figures. The silver decoration creates a striking contrast against the green glaze and gives each piece its unmistakable character.
This vase is a particularly sculptural example, with a strong architectural form, raised geometric decoration and silver details across the surface. The variations in the glaze, crackled surface and naturally aged details contribute to the individuality of the piece.
Argenta became an important part of Gustavsberg’s artistic identity and remained in production for several decades. Today, the series is regarded as one of the defining achievements of Wilhelm Kåge’s long career at Gustavsberg and an important expression of Swedish decorative arts during the 20th century.
