This rare print is one of the most seminal works of the 19th-century European Symbolist and Decadent movements. Created by Rops as frontispiece illustration for the scandalous 1884 novel Le Vice suprême by the eccentric French esoteric write Joséphin Péladan. The piece is a masterful, darkly satirical critique of the moral decay and corruption sweeping late-19th-century elite society—a concept referred to by contemporary French intellectuals as the Finis Latinorum (the twilight of the Latin civilization). This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
