A magnificent old tree rises through the center of the composition, its broad trunk and spreading branches shading the farmhouse and farmyard below. A woman stands near the house with chickens gathered in the yard, bringing an intimate glimpse of everyday rural life to the landscape.
A smaller flowering fruit tree marks the season, its pale blossoms appearing against the fresh greens of the surrounding farmland. Beyond the farmstead, cultivated fields roll toward a thicket of trees along the horizon, creating a wonderful sense of distance and open countryside. The rustic fence anchors the foreground, and the strong vertical lines of the trees carry the eye upward through the expansive branching canopy.
Mullie’s palette beautifully conveys the freshness of spring. Vibrant greens mingle with warm earth tones and golden ochres, accented by the cool turquoise shutters of the farmhouse and soft blue gray of the sky. His textured brushwork gives richness to the fields, trees and clouds, capturing the changing light and natural abundance of the countryside. The result is an inviting portrait of rural Flanders, filled with the simple pleasures of a farm awakening into the growing season.
Victor Mullie was a Belgian painter associated with Kortrijk in West Flanders, where a strong community of artists drew inspiration from the farms, villages and surrounding countryside. His career was cut short by an early death, leaving a relatively small body of work and making surviving paintings especially interesting. His ability was remembered within the Kortrijk artistic community. Writing about the painters of the region in 1958, Belgian painter Pierre Vlerick recalled Mullie as an artist of considerable promise and believed that a longer career might have placed him among the finest painters of his generation. His surviving landscapes reveal the qualities behind that admiration: confident composition, expressive brushwork, an accomplished feeling for color and a genuine affection for the Flemish countryside.
Signed V. Mullie at the lower right and presented in a traditional gilt frame, Farmyard Beneath the Trees brings together landscape, season and country life in a beautifully balanced composition.
