Offered is a set of 4 porcelain bowls in the "Charm" pattern by Mottahedeh. Known for its brilliant colors and rich symbolism, the line was made in Portugal by Vista Alegre. Each individual piece or variation within the set features a translated Chinese blessing or token of goodwill. This pattern was only produced between 1987-1995. While perfectly food safe, these are lovely as decorative bowls. We've taken pictures of all the individual blessings on the bases - we hope they find a home that enjoys their beauty and good energy.
They measure 7.75" diameter, 1.5" tall
Mottahedeh history:
Mottahedeh & Company was founded in 1924 by Rafi and Mildred Mottahedeh. The couple began as avid collectors and importers of Persian, European, and Chinese export porcelain. Following World War II, supply shortages prompted them to shift their focus toward high-quality, historically accurate reproductions. They developed a reputation for recreating fine china for elite institutions, including the White House, the U.S. State Department, and major museums. True to Mottahedeh’s signature style, the Charm pattern was not a contemporary design, but rather a direct adaptation of an antique Chinese export porcelain design—specifically emulating the vivid enameled motifs popular during the late Qing dynasty or early export periods. The Charm pattern is visually striking and immediately recognizable due to its rich color palette and traditional Asian calligraphy. The pieces feature a combination of vibrant solid red (iron-red) and gold surfaces, accented by stylized oriental writing, geometric elements, and depictions of creatures like fish. The distinguishing feature of the collection is the thematic text found on the front and back of the plates/bowls. The most prominent variations feature inscriptions such as:"A charm to insure a surplus of wealth""A charm to bring 10,000 ounces of gold""A charm to provide good fortunes in the four seasons. The collection was crafted using high-fired hard porcelain.
