Monumental vintage hand-decorated brass wall platter from Hong Kong, measuring an impressive 39.5 inches across.
The large oval form is intricately engraved throughout with elaborate floral, bird and botanical motifs arranged in decorative panels. At the center is the Chinese character 福 (fú), an auspicious symbol associated with good fortune, blessings and prosperity. Multiple geometric and floral borders surround the central composition, terminating in a distinctive scalloped outer edge.
The brass has developed a wonderfully varied aged surface with areas of warm gold, bronze and darker patination that emphasize the extensive engraved decoration.
Originally constructed in the form of a large decorative tray or platter, the piece has an existing hanging loop on the reverse and makes a particularly dramatic piece of wall art. Its unusually large scale makes it suitable as a focal point over a console, fireplace or large piece of furniture.
