Dating back to the Meiji period {1868 - 1912}. Well stamped hallmarks indicate it was sold by the Miyamoto Shoko workshop. Miyamoto Shoko was designated as an official purveyor to the Japanese Imperial Household. Hand engraved signature of the artist appears on the bottom right of the shakudo lid. The artist, Mitsutoshi, was a recognized master artisan of the era. The box measures 3" by 4" and is 1" deep. Lid is traditional Japanese shakudo, alloy of copper and gold treated chemically to produce the velvety, blue/black finish. The body is solid high-grade pure silver. The inlay is a relief scene of autumn grasses with flush-set solid gold inlays representing smaller flora. There is also a high-relief sculpted sterling silver flower applied directly to the surface.
