A distinctive pair of antique works by Plato spanning more than three decades, comprising an 1875 edition of Plato’s Phaedo and a 1907 edition of The Republic of Plato.
Plato’s Phaedo, published in Boston by John Allyn in 1875, is the Greek language edition featuring the original deep green cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. Edited by Wilhelm Wagner, Ph.D., the volume includes critical and exegetical notes and analysis.
The Republic of Plato, published by Macmillan and Co. in 1907, is translated into English by John Llewelyn Davies and David James Vaughan. The handsome deep blue cloth binding is accented with crisp gold gilt lettering and rules, while the title page features an engraved classical portrait medallion.
Together, the two volumes make an appealing scholarly and decorative pairing, with contrasting blue and green bindings, gilt details and authentic signs of age. Beautiful displayed in a library, study or bookcase and particularly appealing to collectors of philosophy, classical literature and antique books.
The Republic also contains a handwritten 1907 gift inscription on the front endpaper, adding a personal period detail to the volume.
Sold as a pair.
Condition:
Antique condition with wear consistent with age. The 1875 Phaedo shows rubbing and wear to the green cloth binding, including edge and spine-end wear, fading and surface losses. The 1907 Republic is notably better preserved, with light age-related exterior wear and a handwritten 1907 gift inscription to the front endpaper. Interior pages of both show some age toning.
