This distinctive 17th-century Flemish tapestry pillow is fashioned from an early European tapestry fragment dating to the 1600s. The composition belongs to the tradition of verdure tapestry design, in which luxuriant vegetation, oversized leaves, branches, and botanical forms become the principal decorative subject. Rather than depicting an animal or figural scene, this fragment is centered entirely on the richness of the surrounding plant life, giving the pillow a bold and highly decorative character.
The design is dominated by an impressive arrangement of large overlapping leaves and sweeping branches. Deeply shaded foliage occupies much of the center, while smaller leaves and botanical forms extend across the lower and side portions of the composition. Two pale blue-gray curving branches cross the darker vegetation, creating a strong sense of movement and providing a striking contrast to the broad green forms behind them. The cropped composition of the original larger tapestry gives the surviving fragment an almost abstract quality while still clearly retaining its botanical subject.
Its color palette is particularly rich, combining forest green, dark teal, blue-green, navy, antique gold, mustard, ochre, camel, tan, beige, warm brown, pale blue-gray, and muted cream. The darker greens create depth within the oversized foliage, while the golden and ochre passages illuminate the surrounding ground. Pale blue-gray details add an unusual cool accent to the otherwise earthy palette.
Originally woven as part of a much larger decorative textile, the antique tapestry fragment has been repurposed into a rectangular decorative pillow, allowing an individual section of the historic weaving to be appreciated as an independent work of textile art. Its dramatic scale, early Flemish origin, botanical imagery, and sophisticated coloration make it especially suitable as a statement accent on a sofa, bench, chair, or bed and of particular interest to collectors of antique European textiles and tapestries.
