The substantial folding form is constructed around a rigid plywood core, giving the piece excellent stability and durability. It is decorated throughout with deeply embossed and incised geometric, foliate and stylised motifs arranged within multiple decorative borders. The dark burgundy-brown leather has developed a particularly attractive patina, highlighting the depth and intricacy of the hand-worked decoration.

Opening to reveal a generous leather writing surface, the desk pad incorporates raised compartments along the upper edge for storing pens and other writing accessories. The combination of practical design and elaborate leatherwork gives the piece considerable decorative presence.

The ornamentation is characteristic of traditional North African leatherwork, featuring Moorish-inspired geometric and stylised botanical motifs. Its large scale makes it particularly effective as a centrepiece on a library table, writing desk or console.

The underside is neatly finished in black cotton fabric, helping to protect the surface of the desk or table beneath.

The leather retains its naturally aged surface, with variations in colour, rubbing, scratches and areas of wear consistent with age and use. It has been carefully cleaned and conservation waxed while preserving its original patina. The piece remains solid, straight and in good working order.

A highly decorative and unusual example of vintage leatherwork, equally suited for practical use as a writing accessory or display as an interior decorative object.
