Crafted in … Read more Bring architectural character and Victorian artistry to an interior with this elegant pair of antique ceramic wall plaques. Crafted in England circa 1890, each hand-painted Minton plaque is presented in its original molded oak frame.

The vertical compositions depict two atmospheric European street scenes lined with Gothic churches, half-timbered buildings, steeply pitched roofs, and shopfronts. Small figures walking along the cobbled streets animate each view and provide a sense of scale. Executed in a softly muted palette of ochre, beige, blue, green, and russet, the paintings display finely drawn architectural details and an appealing aged craquelure throughout the glazed surfaces.

Both plaques are signed “J. E. Dean” at the lower right. James Edwin Dean (1863–1935) joined Minton in the 1880s and later became one of the factory’s principal artists. He was admired for his accomplished painting and meticulous attention to naturalistic and architectural detail.

The reverse of each plaque bears the “Mintons, Stoke-on-Trent” factory stamp and retains its wooden backing and hanging wire. Displayed together, the pair would make distinctive accents in a hallway, study, library, or gallery wall. Both are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
