An exceptionally well-made danish dining table from the 1960s, designed by svend åge madsen and manufactured by k. Knudsen & søn. The table combines exquisite proportions with advanced cabinetmaking and a timeless design that stands the test of time.
svend åge madsen was active during the heyday of danish modernism and was particularly noted for his sculptural desks, storage furniture and tables. His furniture is characterized by organic silhouettes, sloping lines and sparse use of decoration. Instead, the grain of the wood, the encounters of materials and the softly worked shapes create the expression.
k. Knudsen & søn was a danish furniture factory and carpentry business in sønder nærå on funen, with a history that stretches back to 1912. The factory is known for well-made furniture where the designers' ideas were combined with the high demands of the danish furniture carpentry tradition on materials, construction and finish.
the table is made of warm golden brown teak. In its basic design, it is round, with an elegant frieze that runs along the outer edge of the tabletop and frames the beautifully grained surface. The profiled edge tapers gently and seems to almost float over the frame, a refined detail that gives the table its light and sophisticated character.
the four legs are made of solid teak and have an unusually well-crafted, sculptural shape. They are oval, gently tapering and attached directly to the frame in a way that creates a continuous transition between tabletop and base. The rounded design language recurs throughout the construction and makes the table look just as beautiful viewed from the side as from above.
the table comes with two extension leaves, each 45 cm long. With both leaves in place, the table is 210 cm long and offers plenty of space for eight to ten people. One of the extension leaves has a frame that can be folded in for easier storage, while the other has no frame. Both are equipped with the same decorative edge frieze as the regular tabletop, and this gives a harmonious and well-crafted overall impression even when the table is fully extended.
the leaves are snapped together with eccentric locks and the extension mechanism is both smooth and stable. There is also a fold-out support leg under the table that can be used when needed and provides extra support when extended.
an exquisite example of danish furniture design, where every line and joint is carefully thought out. The table is functional enough for everyday meals but at the same time has the sculptural quality that makes it the obvious focal point of the room.
