Striking pair of original 1988 oil paintings entitled “The Black Ballerina,” Phase I, signed Henry ’88.
Designed as a complementary set, each painting depicts an expressive ballerina/dancer captured in an elongated, dramatic pose. The figures are rendered in a bold palette of black, deep red, white and gray against heavily textured ivory-white grounds. The sweeping lines and stylized anatomy give the pair a strong late-20th-century Modernist/Expressionist quality.
What makes this pair particularly compelling is the surviving documentation attached to the reverse. An original 1988 judged-show entry label identifies the works as one set, records the title The Black Ballerina, lists the medium as oil and identifies the artist as Henry. An additional vintage art-competition/festival tag remains attached. The original paperwork also records period pricing for the paintings, providing excellent provenance directly associated with the works.
Both canvases retain their original wood stretchers and hanging wires. They are especially effective displayed side-by-side, where the two dancers create a rhythmic, almost choreographed composition.

The textured ivory grounds show age-related discoloration, spotting, surface variation and minor wear, all visible in the photographs. Original labels on the reverse are aged, torn and partially taped but remain historically important to the paintings. I would leave these labels untouched. less
