On a near-black … Read more A long runner in the Bakhtiari kheshti garden-panel design, hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan from hand-spun Ghazni wool. On a near-black ground the field is divided into framed panels that alternate the full length of the piece: one holding a row of stylized horses, camels and deer, the next a bed of flowering shrubs, cypresses and rosettes, each panel bordered in turquoise or ivory in the Bakhtiari manner. The figures are drawn in coral red, gold, sky blue, turquoise, rose and ivory, and a narrow floral vine border runs around the edge.

Against the dark ground the colors glow rather than shout, so the rug reads as dramatic from a distance and charming up close. At nearly twelve feet it suits a long corridor, gallery hall or run of stairs, and it pairs well with moody, eclectic, boho, English country and folk-art interiors, especially rooms with dark walls or wood floors.
