Striking vintage sculptural table lamp constructed from intricately layered corrugated cardboard, in the manner of the innovative cardboard lighting designs associated with Gregory Van Pelt / Flute of Chicago.
Dating to approximately the 1970s, the lamp features an impressive tapered urn-form body composed of hundreds of exposed corrugated layers, creating a highly dimensional geometric texture. The soft dusty-rose/pale pink coloration gives the piece an especially unusual decorative presence.
The lamp retains its vintage brass-tone socket hardware with an Underwriters Laboratories portable lamp label, along with a coordinating ribbed pink finial and vintage conical fabric shade.
A wonderful example of experimental 1970s design, when designers explored humble industrial materials such as corrugated cardboard as sculptural furniture and lighting. Its combination of organic form, repetitive architectural texture and unconventional material makes it particularly well suited to Mid-Century Modern, Postmodern, eclectic and contemporary interiors.
