A vibrant American abstract composition by Mary Pennington Updike Weatherall (1930–2018), executed in richly layered oil on canvas and presented in a simple natural wood frame. The work is organized through interlocking fields of saturated color: yellow, pink, red, orange, turquoise, violet, green, and deep umber-black, each applied with visible surface texture and broad, painterly movement. The composition balances geometric structure with expressive handling, giving the picture both architectural order and lively chromatic energy.

Weatherall was an American artist associated with Ipswich, Massachusetts. She studied fine arts at Radcliffe College, graduating in 1952, and later studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford. Although she is especially remembered for her Ipswich landscapes, this work demonstrates an abstract, color-driven mode, with the painted surface itself becoming the subject through impasto, layered passages, and the tension between luminous and earth-toned blocks of pigment.

The painting is unsigned, but was purchased with a collection of her work privately.
