Hand-formed art glass vase in a deep cognac amber, produced by Huta Szkła Gospodarczego "Ząbkowice" in Lower Silesia, Poland, in the 1970s. The model is known colloquially as "sękacz" — Polish for a knotted branch — after the irregular protrusions running up the body, which resemble knots in bark.
The heavy, teardrop base rises into a slender waist and opens into a dramatically pulled, irregular rim. The darker glass reads as burnt amber and warm brandy where it thickens, lightening to honey where the wall thins and the light passes through — a richer, more saturated tone than the golden examples of this model. Small internal air bubbles are visible in the mass, a signature of the traditional hand-forming process.
A characteristic example of Polish Modernism: mid-century design of the PRL era, where glassmakers turned away from geometry towards organic, sculptural form drawn from nature. The "sękacz" is one of the most recognisable icons of Polish post-war glass and is increasingly collected outside Poland. Each piece is unique in its proportions and in the placement of the knots. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
