Very large urn-shaped vase with a lid; a bulging, tapered body standing on a flush stand with a straight, superimposed … Read more Very large urn-shaped vase with a lid; a bulging, tapered body standing on a flush stand with a straight, superimposed neck; a hemispherically domed insert lid with a pointed, gilded lid knob; smooth surfaces with a black background painting featuring rhythmically arranged vertical white reserves, with vertically arranged, multicoloured peony and flowering branches in the classical east asian style; the deep black ground is overlaid with a dense, delicate interlacing of green tendrils and small, colourful buds. The ‘siang noir’ design was created during the factory’s heyday under the direction of mór fischer in the 19th century. At that time, the european aristocracy was fascinated by orientalism and collected precious east asian art treasures. Fischer copied chinese and japanese models, such as antique famille verte or famille noire pieces, but did not simply reproduce them slavishly. He reinterpreted the patterns and created original, hungarian-european masterpieces. The design is closely related to the famous brick-red sister design ‘siang rouge’ (later known as ‘gödöllő’), which emperor franz joseph i once commissioned for his wife, empress elisabeth, for the hungarian summer palace at gödöllő. Due to its enormous complexity and the need to paint the finest lines onto the black background, siang noir is still executed today exclusively by hand by the manufactory’s most experienced master painters. In addition to siang noir and siang rouge, there is also the siang jaune design in yellow and siang blanc all in white.
