This piece is signed with the brand's brass plaque, "Maitland-Smith, Hand Made in Philippines," mounted inside the case.

The square mahogany top is banded in satinwood and centers a removable panel that flips to reveal two distinct playing surfaces: a rich forest-green tooled leather backgammon board with gilt tooling and burgundy-and-black painted points on one side, and an inlaid burl and satinwood chess and checkers board on the reverse. The surrounding apron is wrapped in the same hand-tooled, gilt-bordered leather with geometric inlay banding for a cohesive, tailored look.

Below, two drawers open on brass ring pulls with rosette backplates — one holds a complete set of Staunton-style chess pieces (cream and ebonized), the other a full set of backgammon checkers and dice, so the table is ready to play the moment it arrives. The case is further dressed with inlaid satinwood floral paterae at each corner and rope-twist stringing along the drawer fronts.

The table stands on four tapered legs, each hand-carved with a continuous guilloche (interlocking oval) motif and capped with a carved acanthus block at the top and brass toe caps at the foot — a hallmark of Maitland-Smith's fine detailing.

A genuine conversation piece and a functional games table in one, equally at home in a study, library, or game room.

Condition
Good vintage condition. Minor wear consistent with age and gentle use — light surface scuffing to the leather edges and one small veneer chip at a corner of the inlaid board (see detail photo).
