The hollow moulded … Read more A substantial early-to-mid twentieth-century English Staffordshire-style mantel figure modelled as a seated King Charles spaniel, circa 1920–1950. The hollow moulded earthenware body is finished in a cream-white gloss glaze with hand-applied black, brown, amber and metallic lustre decoration.

The figure is conceived in the traditional Staffordshire mantel-dog format, with a deeply modelled coat, broad chest, pendant ears and forward-facing stance. The facial details are individually applied, including amber-brown painted eyes, black muzzle markings and darker accents defining the nose and mouth. A dark brown collar encircles the neck and is ornamented with copper- to gold-lustre detailing, including a padlock and linked chain extending across the chest.

The modelling is concentrated on the visible front and sides, while the reverse is comparatively restrained and includes a small firing vent associated with the hollow ceramic construction. The underside is closed and recessed. A small handwritten “178” notation is present but is not identified as a factory mark.

The glazed surface exhibits extensive age-related crazing throughout, creating a fine network of crackle across the cream ground. No chips or structural cracks are reported. The figure is unmarked as to manufacturer and is therefore catalogued within the English Staffordshire revival tradition without assignment to Arthur Wood, Beswick or another specific factory.
