The figure is hollow moulded and formed in a glazed ceramic or porcelain-type body.

The surface is decorated in a Japanese Kutani-inspired vocabulary, with polychrome floral sprays, linear foliage and geometric details executed in green, red and blue with restrained gilt accents. The decoration should be understood as Kutani-style rather than Japanese Kutani ware; the figure is unmarked and is catalogued as Chinese export decorative ceramic.

The modelling is relatively substantial for the type, with carefully defined paws, tail and facial features. The orange ball is integral to the original composition and forms a distinctive element of the reclining pose.

The underside is fully glazed and recessed, with two large circular firing or vent openings associated with the hollow ceramic construction. No maker's mark or factory identification is present.
