You’re Lookin’ FINE… Model 49!!!!! All EIGHT of YOU!!! (Insert whistle!) LOL… This is a STUNNING set of 8 Model 49 teak dining chairs designed by Erik Buch for O.D. Mobler under Domus Danica Collective Association composed of straight, sturdy, classic teak frames with surrounding aprons, distinct curved backrests, and a “floating” seat design. So, these GORGEOUS chairs came to us wearing several layers of fabric that just looked a bit “unappealing” … SIGH. (Insert sad face!) LUCKILY… we have a highly talented Artisan staff member that was able to peel back several layers of that “not so attractive” fabric and UNBELIEVEABLY, he found the fabulous ORIGINAL oatmeal or beige colored tweed fabric YAY!!!! … however; the fabric on one of the chairs was just too worn to save, the others are in beautiful condition!! SO, in order to preserve the set of 8, we decided that it would be brilliant to reupholster two of them so they could better serve as his and hers or captain’s chairs at your dining table! Those two chairs are upholstered in a stunning black and gold tapered teardrop patterned fabric with a taupe colored background and… VOILA… we think it married these chairs magnificently!!! This set of 8 chairs encapsulate the hallmark of quintessential Scandinavian Modern design and are sure to make a bold statement surrounding your dining table; however, you may want to consider our listings for matching Scandinavian Modern dining tables as we have several listed here that will compliment them nicely… check them out!! They would also be wonderful utilized at the office surrounding a conference table, in a waiting area, or use 6 at your kitchen or dining table and the other 2 as extra seating in ANY room. Limitless possibilities!! Wherever they go, they are sure to create a SPECTACULAR seating experience!!
Danish furniture designer Erik Buch was born in 1923 in Copenhagen. He first found furniture design success with his Model 49 chair in 1949. Many of his designs were named after the year he created the design. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, he coupled premium fabric and leathers with high quality, nicely grained woods such as polished oak, teak, and rosewood. O.D. Mobler’s international legacy is inextricably linked to Erik Buch. His work epitomizes the organic elegance and functional minimalism of the Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern movement. He passed away in 1982.
O.D. Mobler was a prominent Danish furniture manufacturer that opened primarily during the mid-20th century. The company began its history as a woodworking and cabinetmaking company under the name Oddense Maskinsnedkeri, which was based in a small town in Oddense, Denmark. They rebranded and their name was changed in the late 60’s early 70’s. The company played a key role in the global explosion of the Danish Modern movement. They specialized in high quality, structurally resilient seating that brought the sought after Scandinavian Modern aesthetic to a broader commercial market internationally. There is no closing date recorded but the company ceased manufacturing operations during the global economic recession in the early 1980’s. Today, authentic O.D. Mobler pieces are highly collectible.
Domus Danica was a prominent Danish collective sales organization and marketing label founded in 1962. The company was established to represent a consortium of seven different independent Danish furniture manufacturers sharing equal shares in the joint venture. They realized that rather than competing individually on the international market, they could consolidate their export, branding, and showroom efforts under a unified umbrella organization. Domus Danica opened major flagship showrooms in Copenhagen, capitalizing on the global demand for “Danish Modern” mid-century design throughout the 1960’s. The collective was managed by Ken Muff Lassen who successfully integrated the collective into the network of “Mobilia,” a highly influential design magazine which boosted the brand’s visibility alongside renowned figures like Verner Panton, Kai Kristiansen, and Poul Hundevad. Ken Muff Lassen sold his shares and left the collective somewhere between 1967-1968 and went on to become the CEO of IKEA Denmark. Because Domus Danica was a collaborative umbrella, it ceased when its independent member factories either closed down or went their separate ways, ultimately by the end of the 20th century.
