A wonderfully unusual American Arts & Crafts hand-hammered copper decorative object in the form of an iconic Western Stetson cowboy hat, circa 1920.
Expertly formed in copper, the miniature hat features a broad, gently undulating brim surrounding a raised crown with the characteristic center crease of a Western Stetson. A finely worked border follows the perimeter of the brim, providing a subtle decorative detail entirely in keeping with Arts & Crafts metalwork.
The surface is particularly appealing, retaining a beautifully aged natural patina ranging from deep reddish-brown copper to areas of dark oxidation and mottled green verdigris. The underside reveals the warmer original copper coloration and evidence of hand working.
Unsigned, as are other known examples of this distinctive form. An essentially identical example has been documented by California Historical Design as an American Arts & Crafts-period hammered copper Stetson hat dating to the 1920s and measuring the same 5.5 by 4.75 by 2.25 inches.
Arts & Crafts era hammered copper Stetson hat. Unsigned. Circa 1920.
