An exceptional early American Arts & Crafts wastebasket by The Lakeside Craft Shops of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, circa 1912–1916.
Constructed in richly figured quarter-sawn oak, the tall polygonal form is composed of individual vertical slats joined near the upper edge by wonderfully graphic interwoven leather straps. Metal ring handles suspended from leather tabs appear at opposing sides, while four projecting wooden feet give the piece its distinctive architectural stance.
The restrained ornament, exposed construction and combination of natural oak, leather and metal embody the ideals of the American Arts & Crafts movement, where craftsmanship and honest materials became the decoration.
Particularly desirable is the surviving original The Lakeside Craft Shops, Sheboygan, Wisconsin paper label on the underside. Lakeside used the motto “Art in the Home” and specialized in beautifully designed small-scale household furnishings during the height of the American Arts & Crafts movement. Wastebaskets were an important part of its production; one historical account notes that the company’s period catalog offered 13 different wastebasket designs.
A wonderful functional antique that today works equally well as a wastebasket, magazine holder, rolled-plan holder or simply as a sculptural Arts & Crafts accent beside a desk or library chair.
