A pair of early 20th-century rectangular cast stone (concrete) garden planters or troughs, salvaged from a historic 1910-1930era estate garden in Asheville, North Carolina. This is an exceptional matching set from the same provenance as the concrete lions also listed.

They feature dense aggregate, bold architectural moulding, and deep-relief classical scrolling acanthus motifs on all four sides. Resting on integral block feet, these troughs are structurally robust and heavy, having earned an undeniable, authentic patina over a century of outdoor exposure.

Provenance & Design
These planters are textbook examples of the Neoclassical "Garden Beautiful" movement of the early 1900s. The acanthus leaf is a foundational element in Corinthian order architecture and Victorian design, symbolizing enduring beauty. Originating from a Gilded Age estate in Asheville, NC, they carry rich historical context. Their long, shallow, footed form makes them ideal sentinels for a front walk, framing a staircase, or anchoring a gravel path. They would provide excellent structural form for a border planting of boxwoods, low-mound succulents, or trailing ivy.

Condition & Structure
The aggregate stone concrete is remarkably sound and structurally stable with no major repairs needed. They are heavy and dense, built to last another century. They each feature two central drainage holes. The patina is heavy and natural—over 100 years of paint layers are peeling and weathering, revealing natural stone aggregates, rust staining, and beautiful natural green lichen growth, which is a desirable character trait of antique concrete rather than a defect.

Structural Details: One planter has a prominent crack/fracture on the upper end and side wall (visible in photos 3, 4, and 5). It remains intact, but fragile along that corner; it may require structural epoxy reinforcement, wire bracing, or a mortar patch from the interior if intended for heavy direct soil planting. The second planter is structurally sound with standard surface wear.
