A large and weighty Sterling Pastoral / American Impressionism period (turn of the 20th century) standing photo frame featuring an intricate scroll and tick-marked border, a raised inner bevel, with an elaborate pastoral village and merriment scene surround.
Done in a combination repousse & chasing decorative silver style reflecting a prominent pastoral and idyllic impulse that thrived in the USA between 1890 and 1910; a counter-style to the emerging industrialist / modernist movements. Equally refreshing, beckoning to simpler social time, in contrast to our increasingly artificial and virtual existence.
The two-inch-wide base presents multiple pairs of 17th century-attired dancing couples, a curious bagpipe-playing musician, and assorted merry makers, while the verticals display an arboreal forest with interspersed country dwellings continuing into the 2-inch-wide pediment. The frame’s original backing and velvet lining was professionally replaced prior to acquisition in the late 1990s. Marked “RC” and “925” and in the artistic manner widely attributed to early Barbour Silver Co.
