This vintage 1950s American folk art mechanical lumberjack whirligig features a highly detailed, hand-cut forest lumberjack scene. Though somewhat damaged, it’s a striking mid-century kinetic folk-art piece, meticulously handcrafted by a skilled woodworker during the 1950s.
Powered by the wind, this weathervane sculpture showcases the classic lumberjack sawing a log, set atop its original long painted wooden baseboard.
It’s clearly a dedicated, hand-cut creation that reflects fine woodworking and artisan skill. The background includes two intricately detailed pine trees, each with individually carved pine boughs, while the lumberjack figure boasts a beautifully contoured body and face.
The piece remains in an honest, beautifully weathered yard art condition, with a naturally acquired vintage patina from decades of outdoor display. Some small wooden elements are missing, including two replaced whirligig blades, part of a tree is damaged, and the base where the log rests has been broken.
