An early American Federal-period country worktable, with clean lines and classical symmetry, dating from approximately 1785–1815.
Constructed of mahogany as primary and pine as secondary. With a wide two-board top, the table features a single drawer above a simple apron, raised on simple square tapered legs. This table showcases numerous characteristics seen in earliest post-independence craftsmanship, including simplicity of lines, a lack of turnings and ornamentation, square topped nails, hand-fitted joinery, and traditional wood oil & beeswax finish.
The top retains a highly desirable untouched appearance, displaying generations of authentic wear, marks, stains, scratches, human handling, and wax glaze that collectors of early Americana seek. This form – a compact 18” by 26” rectangle and a typical 28” inch height, suggest use as a bedside table, small worktable, or household utility table. Today it functions beautifully as an end table, bedside stand, or decorative accent.
It would be equally stunning as a stand-alone piece, under a mirror or portraiture in a Federal-styled home. A beautiful and artful example of American Independence-period craftsmanship with outstanding decorative presence and collector appeal.
