A striking mid-19th-century Continental anatomical study of a human skull, circa 1844. Executed in ink on paper, the drawing depicts the skull in lateral profile with exceptionally fine hatching and careful observation of the cranial sutures, jaw, teeth, and temporal structures.
The work is initialed “D” at lower right and dated “12/5/44” at upper right.
Anatomical drawing played an important role in both artistic and medical education during the 19th century, with students studying skeletal structure to understand proportion, form, and the construction of the human figure. The precision of the linework and shading here is consistent with that academic tradition.
Presented in a substantial dark-stained beveled wood Mission-style frame with wide matting and unusually thick old glass showing visible rippling and optical irregularities. The contrast between the intimate scale of the drawing and the large, architectural frame gives the piece strong graphic presence.
