An exceptional handcrafted William Switzer reproduction of a circa 1840 Austrian Biedermeier secretary, in three sections, combining dramatic figured veneers, architectural proportions, extensive fitted storage, and an unusually elaborate system of concealed compartments.
The secretary is constructed in mahogany and finished in William Switzer’s French Polish Yew II finish, a premium finish that represented approximately a 20% upgrade over the standard base price. The highly figured golden-brown surfaces are accented with ebonized details, geometric inlay, diamond-form escutcheons, and classical decorative motifs. The rich French-polished surface emphasizes the depth and movement of the burl and figured veneers.
The upper section opens to reveal three tall storage compartments with shelving. Below is a fitted writing interior with numerous small drawers, pigeonholes, document slots, and a central locking cabinet. The large writing surface folds down to create a substantial desk.
Particularly notable are five ingenious secret compartments incorporated into the design. These include narrow concealed slide-outs; ebonized-framed pigeonhole sections that pull forward to reveal hidden drawers; and a full-width desk drawer that pulls out to provide access to a concealed sliding interior door. These features reproduce the tradition of hidden storage found in sophisticated European secretaries.
The lower case provides additional large-capacity storage drawers, while the numerous working locks are accompanied by period-style keys.
William Switzer is known for high-end, bench-made reproductions of historic European furniture, with considerable attention given to traditional cabinetry, veneers, finishing techniques, and period detailing. This model retailed for more than $24,000, with the premium French Polish Yew II finish adding substantially to its original cost.
A substantial statement piece that functions equally well as a writing desk, storage cabinet, and architectural focal point. Its combination of elaborate figured wood, fitted interior and multiple secret compartments makes it considerably more unusual than a conventional secretary.
