Rare & Original Swiss Black Forest Dog Inkwell for your consideration. The inkwell measures approx. 3 1/2 inches tall, 2 1/8 inches wide and 2 3/8 inches deep. Likely Switzerland, Brienz, 19th Century. Hand carved and crafted dachshund dog, lifelike head with realistic glass eyes. Stylized bark exterior, Trompe-l'œil, a signature element of Black Forest items, realistically carved wood to mimic natural tree trunks and branches. This gives the charming illusion of the dog popping out of a birch log. The neck or collar line serves as a hidden hinge. Flipping the dog's head back reveals a period, small porcelain inkwell insert with gold gilt decorative border. Very good antique condition. Shows minor wear commensurate with age and use. See photos. Displays whimsical!
