The wonderfully witty composition depicts the father of psychoanalysis as a small, childlike figure cradled in the lap of his mother, Amalia Freud—a clever visual interpretation of Freud’s theories concerning childhood and maternal influence.

Levine was one of the most influential caricaturists of the 20th century, best known for the incisive portraits he created for The New York Review of Books, Esquire, Time, The New Yorker, and numerous other publications.

Signed and dated “D. Levine ’84” at the lower right. The original Forum Gallery label remains affixed to the reverse and identifies the title, artist, medium, date, artwork dimensions, and gallery inventory number FO 11526. Forum Gallery in New York represented Levine and was among the earliest galleries to exhibit his work.

The drawing measures 13 3/4 inches by 11 inches and is presented under glass with neutral matting in a slender silver-tone metal frame measuring 20 1/4 inches by 16 1/4 inches.

A rare, documented original with tremendous character—particularly appealing to collectors of illustration art, psychology, psychoanalysis, literary history, and important 20th-century caricature.

Recently professionally rematted and fitted with premium museum-quality, anti-reflective glass, then presented in its existing silver-tone frame. See less
