Box dates back … Read more One of a kind Vintage Abalone shell box with a rare cameo of a winged warrior goddess. Box dates back to 1950s-60s. It is beautifully hand made with brass trim. I brought together the 2 pieces. The warrior goddess cameo also Abalone shell is hand carved. She is standing above the head of a Pharaoh king, appears to be Greek, holding a sword, and large shield with a face on it, could be Medusa. Medusa shields turned up a lot in Greek and Roman mythology after her transformation, now an icon of protection and fierceness. This Goddess could possibly be Nike because she has wings and was the goddess of victory in battle, as well as in other kinds of contests.
I gilded over the worn brass and then the frame of the goddess cameo to be harmonious. The shell is still outstanding on the little box and has become quite a rare little treasure, harvesting wild abalone is now illegal due to severe population crashes caused by overfishing, poaching, warming ocean temperatures, and devastating bacterial infections like withering syndrome. With all that said, this little box is a precious work of art, and a bit of the past. The box is in good condition with no cracks to the Abalone, with some age appropriate wear. Nothing that would keep it from becoming a one of a kind Goddess in LA piece in my shop. Still works well and is way more gorgeous and truly stunning in person, the camera exaggerates what is not visible to the eye. Box is 3.75 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. The inside is mahogany also is very good condition.
The back has had a few repairs to the brass corners which don't show while sitting face up. Like you, this is the only one. See less
