Chinese hand carved soapstone chess set in turquoise blue and creamy white with a two-sided, inlaid board housed in a foot brass frame, 1960s. The complete set of chess pieces is intricately carved and feature two distinct male figures representing an Emperor and his Mandarin General alongside stylized calvary horses and scholars while the pawns are architectural watchtowers. The blue pieces display varying shades from cobalt blue to an earthy celadon with random white veining further enhancing the visual interest of the set. Each piece is coated in a clear protective lacquer, and a tinted patina is noted on some white ones adding to the set's authentic nature. The double-sided, inlaid stone board is also lacquered to a high shine and rests within a streamlined brass frame raised on classic conical feet making an artful presentation of this beautiful set.
