Beautifully crafted in Normandy, this Country French antique armoire embodies the warmth and expressive craftsmanship of 19th century French provincial furniture. The fruitwood construction reveals softly varied grain beneath a rich, naturally developed patina, giving the armoire exceptional depth and character.
The tall facade is crowned by a deeply molded cornice above a hand carved frieze of scrolling vines, flowers and delicate foliate motifs. A pair of shaped and molded doors follows the fluid lines of the Louis XV style, with double arched upper panels, carved scrolls and sweeping contours continuing through the center and lower recessed panels.
The original hand forged iron hardware is jewelry for the armoire, individually fashioned by a blacksmith to complement its carved fruitwood facade. Long ornamental escutcheons frame the original lock, while remarkable barrel hinges extend along either side of the doors, providing enduring strength and exceptional decorative detail.
The spacious interior offers remarkable versatility for modern storage. Two removable shelves can be positioned at different heights using the existing wooden supports along the interior sides. An included hanging rod beneath the upper shelf allows the armoire to function as a traditional wardrobe, while the lower shelf provides additional storage for folded linens, clothing or household collections. Shelves are removable and can be relocated to the other visible supports, upon request, prior to shipping.
Floral and foliate carving continues across the shaped apron, which descends into curved front feet and completes the balanced Country French silhouette. Generous storage, a beautifully preserved interior and the mellow fruitwood patina make this antique Normandy armoire as practical today as it is historically compelling.
