Long before radio became standard at sea, ships communicated visually through a system of brightly colored flags. The International Code of Signals standardized this maritime language, allowing vessels of different nationalities to communicate across language barriers. Each flag represents a letter, but it can also carry a specific message at sea. Examples shown on the scarf include A — “I have a diver down; keep well clear,” O — “Man overboard,” and V — “I require assistance.”
