Offered is a woven cotton bed cover with fringe featuring the geometric target motif created by Riten Mozumdar (b. 1927 - d. 2006) and stamped with his name because his designs were so popular and imitated that his Fabindia studio introduced the stamped signature.
Mozumdar was one of the most significant artist-designers of the Indian Modernist Design Renaissance in the decades immediately following Independence. By blending traditional Indian block printing with a refined, minimalist aesthetic he created a visual language that forever changed contemporary Indian decor.
"An apprentice of pioneering artist Benode Behari Mukherjee, Mozumdar had a multifaceted résumé, ranging from furniture and art-work to fashion and sculpture. He gleaned inspiration from India's rich history—at one point traveling throughout the country to learn more about fabric-dyeing techniques—as well as abroad, in places such as Finland in the late 1950s, where he worked at both Arabia experimenting with stoneware ceramics, as well as at Marimekko involved in textile manufacturing and absorbed some of the no-frills elements of Scandinavian design. His works are minimalist but often feature bright, bold colors, as seen in his graphic linens for Fabindia and his Kashmiri rugs, awash in fluid calligraphy. Mozumdar designed pavilions and exhibitions in India and showed his work around the world at such prestigious venues as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Copenhagen."
This tapestry or bedcover measures: 92" x 102" and has knotted fringe measuring 2.5" on both sides.

It appears to have been stored away rather than used and is in overall good, clean condition. There are no tears, holes, or stains, however, there is a visible ink spot of the orange on the beige (see photos) that is a crafted workshop flaw. It is recommended to wash in a cold water cycle and air dry, or dry clean. Any wear is commensurate with its age and past handling. less
