This round cinnabar lacquer (tiaohong) box is a masterful example of the layered-carving tradition, with a dense, vivid vermillion surface.
The lid is carved in deep relief with a sinuous dragon rising among stylized wave crests — its scales, mane and whiskers sharply defined — joined by four leaping carp (a traditional "carp leaping over the dragon gate" motif, symbolizing success and transformation). The entire ground is filled with repeating arc-shaped water patterns, creating a rich, tactile, almost sculptural surface that catches the light as it moves across the carved folds.
A small lidded circular form, this piece is traditionally used as a seal-paste box, rouge pot, or scholar's trinket box, and makes a striking standalone display object on a desk, shelf, or in a cabinet of curiosities.
