A striking and unusually refined American white ironstone covered slop jar, dating to the Mid-Victorian period, circa 1865–1875. Originally part of a coordinated bedroom toilet service, this substantial covered vessel is distinguished by its bold magenta-purple banding, gilt detailing, elaborate molded Rococo Revival scroll handles, and hand-painted interlaced “DPC” cipher, repeated on both the body and fitted cover.
The opaque white ironstone body is exceptionally decorative for a utilitarian form. Broad bands of rich magenta are bordered with fine gilt lines, while additional gilding accentuates the sculptural handles, rim, and molded details. The original domed cover is finished with a similarly decorated molded finial.
The vessel is attributed to American manufacture, most likely within the northeastern white-granite/ironstone pottery tradition flourishing during the third quarter of the 19th century. Trenton, New Jersey, and New York were major centers for this type of ware. Period American records document white-granite toilet services with molded forms and elaborate decoration, including the use of magenta with gold ornament as early as 1860. By the 1870s, American trade price schedules specifically distinguished higher-grade toilet services decorated with a “colored band, gold edge and trimmings”—a treatment closely corresponding to the decoration seen here.
The attribution is further supported by the vessel's material, press-molded construction, two-handled covered slop-jar form, and decorative vocabulary, all of which correspond closely with documented American white-granite toilet wares produced during the 1860s and 1870s. The underside is unmarked, so no specific pottery is assigned.
The repeated hand-painted DPC monogram indicates that the piece was likely made or decorated as part of a personalized private toilet service rather than as plain institutional or utilitarian ware. Such complete bedroom services typically incorporated a wash basin and ewer, chamber pot, soap and brush dishes, and a covered slop jar such as this example.

The ironstone body, original fitted lid, molded handles, and lid finial are intact. There is age-related wear and loss to the gilt decoration, particularly along the edges and raised areas, consistent with handling and use over approximately 150 years. Magenta/puce decoration and hand-painted DPC monogram remain strong and well preserved. Please refer to photographs for additional condition details. less
