This large earthenware basin belongs to the centuries-old ceramic tradition of the Albaicín, where the potters of Granada have worked their green-and-white palette since the sixteenth century. The interior is decorated entirely by hand: a pomegranate rises above a leafy spray at the base, ringed by concentric bands of feathery brushwork that radiate outward to a broad unglazed terracotta rim. The green is the copper-oxide green that has defined Granadine pottery for generations, laid over a soft ivory ground. The pomegranate, granada in Spanish, is both the name and the heraldic symbol of the city.

Once a working vessel, lebrillos served Andalusian households for cooking, washing, and daily labor, a bowl of this scale is now a commanding artistic presence on a wall.
