Morris Katz Seascape with Seagulls Textured Oil in Silver Frame, Signed 1973
An expressive seascape oil painting by Morris Katz American (b 1931 – d. 2010), signed and dated 1973 in the artist's characteristic etched script. The vertical composition captures three seagulls gliding through a dramatic, smoke-toned sky above a churning ocean. Katz's signature palette-knife technique is on full display in the thickly textured waves below, rendered in deep blues, teals, and stark white impasto that captures the energy and motion of breaking surf. The heavy application of paint creates a tactile, almost sculptural surface typical of his fast, gestural "Instant Art" method. Presented in a weathered antiqued wood frame with a slim gold inner lip that complements the cool marine palette. A striking example of Katz's early-career prolific, spontaneous style, blending abstraction with representational seascape subject matter.

About the artist :
Morris Katz American (1931–2010)
Morris "Moshe" Katz was a Polish-born American painter best known for his rapid, prolific "Instant Art" technique. Born in Malopolskie, Poland, he showed artistic talent early and began studying painting as a teenager under Dr. Hans Fokler of the Munich Academy. A Holocaust survivor, he survived Auschwitz and later lived in a displaced persons camp in Germany, where he earned a carpentry diploma before eventually immigrating to the United States and continuing his art training at the Art Students League in New York.
Katz developed a distinctive rapid-fire painting method around 1956, using a palette knife and rolls of toilet paper instead of brushes, allowing him to complete a full canvas in minutes. This technique became a signature performance art, and he became a fixture of the Catskills "Borscht Belt" resort circuit — entertaining crowds at hotels like Grossinger's, The Concord, and Kutsher's with live painting demonstrations.
He earned two Guinness World Records — for fastest painter (a canvas completed in under 30 seconds) and most prolific painter, having created an estimated 280,000+ works over his career, surpassing even Picasso's output. His subjects ranged widely: seascapes, landscapes, dancing Hasidim, clowns, children, city scenes, and Jewish/biblical themes.
Katz appeared on television over 600 times, was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!, and his work is held in more than 100 museums worldwide, including three pieces in the Smithsonian Institution. He died in 2010 in the Bronx, New York. Known affectionately (and sometimes dismissively) as the "King of Schlock Art," his legacy blends genuine artistic training with populist showmanship, and his work continues to circulate widely in the collectibles and auction market today.
