Chanel records SEM's work as the first known artistic representation of the Chanel No. 5 perfume, dating to 1921, the same year the fragrance was introduced.
The illustration shown here is associated with SEM's celebrated White Bottoms album of 1927. The original image depicts a fashionable woman dramatically responding to an oversized bottle of Chanel No. 5—a wonderful combination of fashion, humor and sophisticated Art Deco graphic design. The Musée Carnavalet identifies the original work as a chromolithograph, and an example is held in its permanent collection in Paris. See less
