This substantial hand-formed ceramic makes a visually & conceptually striking statement about motherhood. A woman simultaneously pregnant with one child while another emerges from her back. It's a powerful meditation on the cyclical, never-ending nature of fertility & the female body as a site of constant creation.
The composition suggests that motherhood isn't a single moment but an ongoing state. She’s not just bearing one child, she's actively giving birth while already nurturing the next. It uniquely conceptualizes the feeling of perpetual creation, the body being used as an endless vessel, & simultaneously living through multiple stages of mothering at once. The overlap of pregnancy & emergence captures something psychologically & physically true, which is that mothers are always creating, birthing, nurturing, & transforming.
The piece is solid raku-fired stoneware, its genuinely heavy & tactile. Those warm honey-amber surfaces contrast with darker oxidized patches, & the porous finish on the base shows raw clay marked by the firing process. These aren't flaws, rather, they're the visible stylings of the raku technique. Raku includes unpredictability & rapid cooling that make each piece singular by definition.
At just over 8 inches tall but substantial in weight, this striking piece truly reads differently from every angle. Unsigned with no markings of any kind.
